This Lightguard Luminator Emergency light is new - we’ve tested all its features and functions and it’s working fantastically, as expected. The Luminator Series is ideal for locations where oil, water and
dust-resistant equipment are required. The Luminator is UL listed for use in damp and wet
locations with temperatures ranging from 32°F (0°C) to 104°F (40°C). The housing is made of impact resistant, fiberglass-reinforced polyester. The fully gasketed housing along with neoprene washers at the base of each lamp head assure a complete seal that’s chemical, moisture and corrosion resistant. It’s suitable for NEMA 3, 4x and 12 areas. The lamp heads are constructed of polycarbonate and have shatter-resistant lamp heads. This emergency light has dual input of 120 or 277 VAC. When wired to an AC line, the charger provides a constant current to the Ni-Cad batteries. In the event of a power outage, the lights switch to battery powered and the unit’s alarm sounds (they can be silenced with a push of a button). Even during a brownout (AC voltage drops below 20% of normal), the lights will also activate. The new Ni-Cad batteries are 12 volts with a total of 9 Amp hours. After the power is back on, Lightguard’s high performance, temperature compensated charger restores battery to full charge within UL 924 requirements. No need to worry about deep battery discharge as Lightguard’s low voltage disconnect switch (LVD) prevents it. The Luminator is a great emergency lighting solution for manufacturing facilities, industrial locations, parking decks, warehouses and water treatment facilities. The Luminator can do all this fancy power management thanks to its Smart Charger,
designed around an 8-bit microprocessor to provide unmatched reliability and performance.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SMART CHARGER
The Smart Charger microprocessor has command of all critical circuit functions and operations. The charger is a two-stage, constant-current charging system constantly monitored and under control from µp. The charging state is visually apparent by viewing the charge status indicator. Temperature compensation is always enabled by the thermal detection system on board the µp and has an effective range from -40°C to 40°C. The Smart Charger microprocessor allows for a precision temperature compensation algorithm equal to 3 milli-volts per degree C.
FAULT DETECTION & MONITORING
Fault detection is always provided in a visual format with the option to have audible alarms as well. When audible diagnostics are used, the visual fault indicator (LED) and audible tone will be synchronized for clear fault identification. The Smart Charger diagnostics monitoring circuit is continuous and in real time. The benefits of real time monitoring allows the microprocessor to self-heal all fault conditions when remedied. The battery voltage is continuously monitored during normal AC operation and compared to preset limits programmed in the µp. During a manually invoked or automatic self-test routine, the battery voltage is monitored for proper capacity-to-load ratios and indicates a battery fault if it is determined the unit will not meet the 90-minute required run time. This circuit also monitors the system for a “Reverse Polarity” condition on the battery connection. A reverse polarity condition will result in a l up command to shut down normal operations and indicate a battery failure, thus preventing any damage to the circuitry.
LED/Light Engine Monitoring
The LED/light engine voltage and current are continuously monitored and compared to preset limits stored in the µp. The resolution of the monitoring circuit exceeds the UL required 50% detection rate for LED exit signs. Should the compared voltage or current remain out of limits for a period of five clock cycles, the µp will command a lamp failure alarm condition.
Transfer Circuit Monitoring
The transfer circuit is monitored any time the unit is cycled into a manual or automatic test. Any noted deficiency in the transfer of the equipment to the emergency mode will display a transfer fault condition.
Over/Under Voltage Monitoring
During system initialization, the µp will sample and verify the utility voltage against preset limits stored in the memory. If after five clock cycles the voltage does not fall within the pre-determined parameters, the unit will not complete initialization and will toggle faults.
SO JUST WHO ARE THESE NEMA PEOPLE?
(AND WHAT DO THEIR DEFINITIONS MEAN FOR THIS UNIT)
The members of NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) get together annually at an Eyes Wide Shut type orgy. After they’ve satisfied their prurient interests and the blood returns to their cerebral cortex, they turn their attention to enclosure types. This LightGuard Luminator’s enclosure is suitable for NEMA 3, 4x and 12. Here are NEMA’s definitions of those types:
NEMA TYPE 3 ENCLOSURES:
Type 3 enclosures are constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA TYPE 4X ENCLOSURES:
Type 4X enclosures are constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water); that provides an additional level of protection against corrosion; and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA TYPE 12 ENCLOSURES:
Type 12 enclosures are intended for use indoors to protect the enclosed equipment against fibers, flying, lint, dust and dirt, and light splashing, seepage, dripping and external condensation of noncorrosive liquids. There shall be no holes through the enclosure and no conduit knockouts or conduit openings, except that oil tight or dust tight mechanisms may be mounted through holes in the enclosure when provided with oil-resistant gaskets. Doors shall be provided with oil-resistant gaskets. In addition, enclosures for combination controllers shall have hinged doors, which swing horizontally and require a tool to open. When intended for wall mounting, Type 12 enclosures shall have mounting means external to the equipment cavity, captive closing hardware, and provision for locking. Type 12 enclosures provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment, provide a degree of protection against falling dirt, against dust, against lint, fibers that are flying or circulating and against dripping liquids and the light splashing of liquids.
