Are You a Candidate For Microdermabrasion?
If you have or have had acne, discolorations, superficial lines and wrinkles, uneven texture or sun damaged skin -- you may be a candidate for Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion can not be expected to removed deep scars or wrinkles, birth marks or tattoos. If you have no history of hypo/hyper-pigmentation or keloid scarring in your family you should consider microdermabrasion as an alternative to a deeper invasive peel.
Microdermabrasion is not recommended for those who have active keloids, undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, active, weeping acne (stages 3 to 4), active rosacea, unstable diabetes or auto-immune system disorders.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, aging skin cells produce excess amounts of free radicals which are unstable oxygen molecules. Wrinkles are part of the Aging Process. Under ideal circumstances theses are removed by naturally occurring antioxidants within the skin’s cells. With older skin cells the antioxidants are in short supply leaving free radicals on the skin. The remaining free radicals damage the cell membranes, proteins and DNA of the skin and eventually will break down the collagen. Chemicals are released during this process and inflammation occurs. It is a combination of these cellular and molecular events that lead to wrinkles and aging.
*The Layers of the Skin
The skin has three layers: epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous. The epidermis is the outermost layer which everyone sees; the dermis is the middle layer, and the subcutaneous is the inner layer.
Early in life when you are young, the skin does an efficient job of stretching and holding in moisture. The dermis (middle layer) has an elastic quality due to the fibers called elastin
Elastin gives the skin a smooth feel and helps the skin look young. Collagen is found in the dermis and helps prevent wrinkles.
Over time, the skin’s collagen and elastin diminish. As a result the skin becomes thinner and cannot hold moisture in the epidermis. The fat in the subcutaneous layer which gives the skin a plump, firm appearance also begins to disappear. The result is sagging skin and wrinkles. Wrinkles are most common on the face where facial muscle contractions have been repeated over many years.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the skin and gives the skin strength. Although elastin is less abundant, it is equally important as it gives skin its elasticity (flexibility). Vacuuming.
Even though vacuuming is necessary to move crystals through the system, there are additional specific effects vacuuming has on the skin. How much vacuum pressure is necessary? How much is too much? The answer is dependent partially on what estheticians want to achieve and how adept they are in using any microdermabrasion machine. The other portion is a function of the effects of vacuum pressure both good and bad.
The good. Some vacuum pressure will stimulate the skin. This increases blood flow and oxygen to the skin. The result can be healthier and more vibrant-looking skin. Some have attributed vacuum pressure to the stimulation of the collagen layer as well as the movement of subcutaneous fluids--lymphatic drainage. The extent that this can occur is nearly impossible to demonstrate to a client.
The bad. Vacuum pressure--even without crystal flow--can create some negative effects, including: Appearance of punctuates, a collection of blood just below the skin's surface, similar to a hickey; breaking the skin and drawing blood; Unwanted melanin production; or stimulation of latent conditions such as herpes, unnecessary client discomfort.
