Davies of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. They never were stained or oil and they are from the mid-20<br>th<br>century. We have listed all five carving together and without any reserve. These carvings are a little unusual in that three of the carvings depict Sailors capturing Mermaids. The first carving in mounted to a 3 ½” by 11 ½” piece of slate stone. It depicts a Drunken Sailor pulling a Mermaid out of the water with some rope.  On the ground is a small wood bottle marked XXX. The 2<br>nd<br>& 3<br>rd<br>carved also depict sailors capturing Mermaids. The tall carving is 8 ¼” and has one problem. One of the braids on the mermaid is missing. The other carving measures 7 ¼” tall and I’m not exactly sure what is taking place. Measuring only 4 ¼” tall the 4<br>th<br>carved Mermaid is combing her hair. The writing on the base is part of the wood and not for the carving. The last and largest of the five carving depicts a Mermaid with her hands cupped. It measures 14” tall and is one a small 3” by 5” base. In our close-up photograph you can see a repair to one of the hands.
